Let's enhance our school together
The Municipality of Bologna , through its announcement Qualifichiamo insieme la nostra scuola 0-6 (Let’s enhance our school together 0-6), supports and promotes awareness among families of children’s service, with the goal of enriching and enhancing educational offers, granting the occasion to experiment with meaningful approaches to parental
participation, and methods of interaction between schools and their surrounding environment. Every school year, committees from nursery schools, kindergartens, and centers for children and families have the chance to develop and propose enhancement activities in partnership with associations, tertiary sector entities, and registered social cooperatives such as ours.
In this context and since 2019, the Center has been proposing the educational course Crescere oltre gli stereotipi (Growing up beyond stereotypes), made up of three encounters with dramatized readings and creative workshops for children, their families, and school staff in order to reflect on the value of an inclusive and conditioning-free education. The project also involves the selection of thematic illustrated children’s books, given for free to the nursery schools and kindergartens taking part in the course.
The environment children live in, in fact, often proposes stereotypical and rigid models that are unconsciously internalized, and will prevent them from seeing and understanding the complexity and nuances of identity. The ways adults act towards children based on their assigned gender, as well as the requirements and expectations they have of boys and girls, contributes to the reinforcement of gender stereotypes.
It’s important to create educational contexts proposing, from the first years of childhood, varied stereotype-free cultural models to aid children in developing their personality, attitudes, interests, and relationships, free of conditioning or impositions and support the development of their identity while taking individual paces, paths and characteristics into account.
The course’s goal is to encourage awareness of and attention towards these themes, and to provide tools to build spaces, activities, and proposals that are not inherently marked by stereotypical narrations, or may preclude children from freely choosing games, readings and relationships they might want to engage with.
First encounter “On the side of children”
Reflection on stereotypes, differences, and gender roles starting from personal experience to develop empathy and the ability to listen to collective and individual needs, and to envision an effective educational community, able to enhance difference by using new and inclusive communication and inclusive activities. Dramatized readings and creative
workshop.
Second encounter “Reading differences”
Children grow up with, relate to, and find analogies with their life in children’s books.
Dramatized readings and creative workshop.
Third encounter “Many stories outside”
Final celebration near our offices at Cavaticcio Park, with dramatized readings of selected books and creative workshops to re-elaborate on the stories we read.
The first two encounters will be held in school settings.
The program presented here is approximate, and may be subject to changes in agreement with the specific needs of the participating nursery schools and kindergartens.
