Inspired by the novel Da un pugno di polvere by Donata Mljac Milazzi (Rossini Editore, 2024), Io danzerò da sola retraces the life of Mariasilvia Spolato, a mathematician from Padua who, in 1970s Italy—when social issues and the struggle for civil rights were still in their early stages—had the courage to declare her homosexuality, thereby losing her teaching position, the closeness of friends and family, and every form of support.

 

Following Mariasilvia from Padua to Milan, to Rome, and then on the trains that take her across Europe in an attempt to unite the voices of all those who demand the right to be themselves, or who offer her shelter at night, when even keeping a home has become impossible, we arrive in Bolzano, the city she chooses to live out the second part of her life—that of a homeless woman. But not even then does Mariasilvia, wrapped in the legendary aura her past has given her, stop being who she was: even as a homeless person, warmed by the generosity of those who continue to love her, or a victim of the unjustified violence of others, she will proudly reaffirm the right of her choice to be fully herself, even at the cost of dancing alone!
